Role overview
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Hospital Debt Collector to join our Hospital Revenue team. In this role, you will manage outstanding patient and health fund accounts, deliver clear and respectful payment conversations, and support patients to access appropriate payment plans and financial assistance pathways. You will balance strong collection outcomes with a patient-first approach that aligns with healthcare values, privacy obligations, and regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Contact patients regarding outstanding accounts in a professional, respectful manner.
- Liaise and build string relationships with health fund partners to ensure that correct documentation is supplied and accounts are paid within contractual timelines.
- Negotiate and set up payment plans in line with policy, affordability, and hardship considerations.
- Assess and escalate eligible matters for financial assistance, concessions, or hardship support pathways.
- Manage end-to-end follow-up activities (promises to pay, reminders, disputes, write-off recommendations where applicable).
- Liaise with internal stakeholders (Admissions, Clinical areas, Health Funds/Insurers, Finance) to resolve billing issues and ensure accurate account status.
- Maintain accurate notes, call outcomes, and documentation in the patient billing system/CRM.
- Prepare and action correspondence in line with approved templates, privacy requirements, and record-keeping standards.
- Contribute to process improvements, reporting, and quality assurance activities (e.g., ageing, recovery rates, contactability).
- Ensure all collection practices comply with applicable laws, hospital policies, and industry guidelines, including privacy and confidentiality.
About you
- Proven experience in collections, accounts receivable, billing, or credit control (healthcare or complex services environments highly regarded).
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain billing clearly and handle difficult conversations with empathy and professionalism.
- Demonstrated ability to negotiate sustainable payment arrangements and manage competing priorities.
- Sound judgement and a commitment to ethical collection practices and patient dignity.
- High attention to detail and strong administrative skills (notes, documentation, and follow-through).
- Confidence using billing systems/CRMs and Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of privacy and confidentiality requirements when handling patient information.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
