About the role

 This position is expected to actively participate in organisational processes - including the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives and related training – and by so doing, help to identify and address the limitations of our safety systems. A key role of this position is to notify clinicians when they have concerns about a patient’s condition.

Key Responsibilities

  • The switchboard operator's main responsibility is to answer and direct telephone calls in a polite and informative manner with empathy and understanding of patients from diverse, cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds
  • Protect the confidentiality of patient clinical records without compromising appropriate clinical workforce access to patient clinical information
  • Answer and direct all incoming calls and provider operator assistance as needed
  • Perform clerical tasks such as filing, data entry, collating, photocopying, correspondence and stationery ordering
  • Handle emergency calls immediately and relay comprehensive and accurate information, as required
  • Record and compile statistics for the role supervisor as required
  • Undertake other administrative tasks as directed from time to time
  • Provide information and support the implementation of continuous quality improvement activities that develop the role and integration of services across Chris O'Brien Lifehouse

 Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge of and/or experience in cancer services
  • Previous experience working within a hospital switchboard service or within a busy environment
  • Excellent personal presentation and attention to detail 
  • Proficient in keyboard skills and experience in the use of windows based programs
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under minimal supervision
  • Excellent customer service skills and experience working with the public
  • Excellent organisational skills, including demonstrated time management skills, initiative and ability to make decisions
  • Evidence of immunisations to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy for a Category A position
