About the role

The Switchboard Operator serves as the first point of contact, professionally answering and directing calls with courtesy, ensuring callers are connected to the appropriate person or department based on their needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Answer, screen, and direct incoming calls professionally, providing courteous, empathetic, and informative assistance to patients, staff, and external callers from diverse backgrounds.
• Maintain strict patient confidentiality while ensuring appropriate access to clinical information, and respond promptly and accurately to emergency calls.
• Perform clerical duties including data entry, filing, photocopying, correspondence, stationery ordering, and other administrative tasks as required.
• Maintain accurate records, compile statistics, and provide reports to supervisors as needed.
• Support continuous quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the effective integration and delivery of services across the organization.

 Essential Criteria

• Knowledge of or experience in cancer services and/or working in a hospital switchboard or other fast-paced healthcare environment.
• Excellent oral communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, with experience interacting professionally with the public.
• Proficient in keyboard use and Windows-based applications, with strong attention to detail and professional presentation.
• Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, make decisions, show initiative, and work efficiently with minimal supervision.
• Evidence of immunisations to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy for a Category A position
